In addition to having world-class fishing, Boca Paila on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is a wonderful spot for those just looking to relax and get away. Enjoy walking on a virtually deserted beach for a mile in both directions. Snorkel in the warm Caribbean Sea along Palancar Reef, which runs parallel to the shore.
One of our most popular activities is a visit to the mystical Mayan ruins of Tulum perched atop a cliff overlooking the turquoise Caribbean (about a 40-minute drive north of the lodge). True Mayan ruins fans can visit Coba (30 minutes beyond Tulum) where, amidst dense jungle, another site is presently being excavated by archaeologists.
Boca Paila is located inside the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a 1.3 million acre Mexican National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Reserve consists of lowland forest, flooded savannas, mangroves, and a portion of the world’s second largest coastal barrier reef. It is home to 800 plant species and provides habitat for 350 species of birds, as well as jaguar, puma, ocelot, spider and howler monkeys, crocodiles, manatee, and many types of turtles. In addition, the Sian Ka’an is home to 23 different archaeological sites of pre-Columbian, Mayan culture.
We can arrange guided tours (including boat trips) through the Reserve. We highly recommend the 2- to 3-hour boat trips that allow you to view the unique flora and fauna up close, swim mangrove channels all while you search for and discover hidden Mayan ruins along the way.
Ocean kayaks are available at the lodge for independent exploring in the Boca Paila / Sian Ka’an Lagoon or in the sea right in front of the lodge. Our staff knows the area well and will point you in the right direction. Let us know if you would like to reserve a kayak for your stay with us.
Maybe try your hand at kite surfing. We are excited to offer professional kitesurfing classes right at Boca Paila. This exhilarating sport has become very popular all along the Yucatan, and we just happen to be blessed with fantastic conditions for the beginner, intermediate and advanced kiteboarder. Let us know if you want to give kite surfing a try – we think you’ll love it!
Tulum is just a 25-minute drive up the coast and in addition to the Mayan ruin tours the area offers restaurant options, salsa lessons, standup paddleboarding and other activities.
